Commodity codes, tariff codes, HS codes – are all essentially the same thing. It is a unique number that is used around the globe to classify goods. It identifies what your goods are and helps determine:
· Duties that may be applicable to the goods
· Whether the goods are subject to trade restrictions
· Whether they qualify for preferential duty rates under trade agreements.
In the UK commodity codes are 10 digits for exports and 8 digits for imports. Universally all codes are the same up to the first 6 digits.
How Commodity Codes link to UK EUR1’s
When applying for a UK EUR1 certificate, the commodity code is vital as it helps determine whether the goods qualify for preferential origin under a trade agreement.
Each commodity code has its own ‘rule of origin’ and these rules clarify how much of the good must be made or sufficiently processed in the UK to count as originating. Without knowing the correct commodity code, you cannot accurately apply the commodity code specific rules.
Commodity codes are the foundations for most customs processes – including origin.
