Embrace the Future: Digital ATA Carnets Are Coming in 2026

The world of international temporary exports is about to change for the better. Are you prepared?

In 2026, the global rollout of Digital ATA Carnets (eATA Carnets) will begin in earnest, marking a major step forward in how businesses move goods temporarily across borders. From trade shows and professional equipment to cultural exhibits and sporting events, thousands of companies worldwide rely on ATA Carnets for fast, duty-free export and re-import. With digitisation on the horizon, now is the time to prepare.

What Is a Digital ATA Carnet?

A Digital ATA Carnet is the modern, paperless version of the widely trusted international customs document. It replaces the traditional multi-page paper booklet with a secure, mobile-based system. Travelers use a Carnet Wallet App to manage declarations, while customs officers scan QR codes via a secure Customs Portal. Everything is tracked centrally and in real-time, improving security, visibility, and convenience.

Why This Matters

This shift isn’t just about convenience, it’s about global efficiency and sustainability.

Digital carnets:

  • Speed up border crossings and reduce manual paperwork.

  • Lower the risk of document loss or delays.

  • Enable real-time tracking and simplified audits.

  • Support your ESG commitments by going paperless.

With pilot countries already adopting the new system. The first official digital border crossings begin in Q1 2026, with more nations coming online through 2027.

5. Plan for Mixed Use

During the global transition, some customs offices will still require paper carnets. You'll be advised which countries accept digital versions. Until then, dual-format carnets are available for smooth, uninterrupted operations.
