Export Documentation Pathways - Aligning Paperwork with the World

ree

Exporting goods isn’t just about moving boxes from one place to another – it is also about moving them with the correct paperwork. From Certificates of Origins to ATA Carnets, the documents you choose can affect everything, from how quickly your goods clear customs to how much duty you would have to pay. However, with multiple document types, varying destinations and purposes, it can be easy to get lost in the options.

This guide has been formulated with the intention of aiding you in your understanding of the commonly used export documents. Whether you are shipping goods permanently, sending samples abroad or dealing with country specific legalisation requirements, we have mapped out the key documents you would use in the form of a visual flow chart.

Whether you are a new exporter or just need a quick refresh – this guide should help you find the right path to the paperwork you need.

UK Certificate of Origin is an export document which proves the origin of a good. It can be required by certain countries and is always worth checking with your importer if you need one. The goods can originate from any country, but any goods of non-UK origin will require foreign origin evidence.

UK EUR1 is an export document which can help you to benefit from duty reductions. The goods in the EUR1 need to be of UK origin and these documents can only be provided to goods being exported to countries the UK has a trade agreement with.

Arab Certificate of Origin is very similar to a UK certificate of origin in that it provides proof of a good's origin. Whilst not always, this certificate can sometimes be a requirement for goods being exported to certain Arab League countries. It is always worth checking with your importer if they need this.

Embassy Legalisation ensures documents are accepted for official purposes to relevant countries. This can be a requirement of the importer.

Certification is completed by the Chamber of Commerce. Please note we certify signatures and not documents; therefore, we would always ask you to sign any documents for us to be able to certify them.

ATA Carnet allow for the temporary export and subsequent re-import of certain goods without the requirement of paying duties and dealing with other red tape associated with exporting. These goods would need to be professional equipment, commercial samples or exhibition equipment.

Getting your documents in order can remove some of the stress out of exporting, whether you are dealing with customers, customs or consulates.
