Stamping Commercial Documentation – What does it really mean?

As the Export Documentation Team at Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce, we provide the service of stamping commercial documentation. However, there is often confusion around what this means.
Many people assume that the stamping confirms the accuracy of the document itself. This is not the case. When you submit a document for stamping, you will notice we will always ask for it to be signed by an authorised person from your company.
Why? Because what we certify is the signature, not the document.
We do not have the ability to verify the details in your commercial documents, but we can confirm the signature on the documentation is genuine. This is possible because we keep records of your companies’ authorised signatories in the form of your formal undertaking which you provide to us annually.
In short:
- We do not validate the documents content
- We certify that the signature matches the authorised specimen we hold.
This process ensures the authenticity of the signatory – and this is the service that is referred to when you are requested to get a document stamped by the Chamber.
