From Compliance to Competitive Edge: Unlocking the Power of AEO Accreditation

Updated: 2 days ago

Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) status is an internationally recognised quality mark for businesses in the global supply chain. It signals strong customs compliance, financial stability, and—depending on the type—robust safety and security standards.

Types of AEO:

  • AEO-C: Customs Simplifications

  • AEO-S: Security & Safety

  • AEO-F: Full status (both C & S)

Key Benefits:

  • Fewer customs checks and delays

  • Priority treatment at borders

  • Easier access to customs simplifications

  • Recognition by international customs (e.g., US, China, Japan)

  • Enhanced reputation and internal compliance

Is AEO Right for You?

AEO is ideal for businesses with international supply chains—importers, exporters, freight forwarders, customs brokers, and carriers. It requires strong operational transparency, documented procedures, and robust IT and security systems.

How to Apply

  • Prepare thoroughly: Ensure you have a GB or XI EORI number. Gather SOPs, policies, audit trails, contracts, and security documentation.

  • Complete the application: There are 7 sections

  • C117

  • C118-1

  • C118-2

  • C118-3

  • C118-4

  • C118-5

  • C118-6 — This is only to be filled in if completing AEO-S or AEO-F

  • There are sub sections to all the sections listed above

  • Once started, you have 28 days to complete it. After finishing, the full application must be submitted within 24 hours.

  • Expect audits: One virtual and one on-site audit will be conducted.

  • Timeline: Preparation may take months. HMRC will respond within 120 days of submission.

Maintaining AEO Status

  • Conduct regular internal audits and keep procedures up to date.

  • Notify HMRC of any significant changes (e.g., key personnel).

  • Prepare for re-audits every two years to retain your status.
